'C-FOAL GETS A NAME!

Upper Canada Village announces winner of Name the Canadian Foal contest

Morrisburg, Ontario –The birth of a Canadian foal in June at Upper Canada Village was a very special occasion.  This young foal, a colt, is Upper Canada Village’s newest addition to their stable of Canadian horses that are born, raised, trained and work onsite at the attraction.  The foal has been referred to as C-Foal by the horse handlers at the Village (until he has his permanent name) since the Canadian Livestock Registry stipulates his name must begin with the letter ‘C.  The colt is special as he is born in the year that marks the 350th anniversary of the Canadian Horse in Canada.

To celebrate the anniversary, Upper Canada Village ran a ‘Name the Canadian Foal” contest and will have a highlighted Canadian component at its Labour Day Horse Lovers’ Weekend event.

The young colt will be known as Champ, a name that was submitted by Kylie Bell, of Winchester, Ontario.

Contest criteria for the selection of the name included:

  • Name must begin with the letter ‘C’ as required by the Canadian Livestock Registry for all Canadian horses born in 2015;
  • Suitable for the foal (a colt, markings, behavior, attitude)
  • Appropriateness for the Upper Canada Village setting;
  • Practical for use by the horse handlers and horse drivers;
  • And any other convincing reasons.

As the contest winner, Kylie and her family will be the Grand Marshall of the Canadian Horse Parade at Upper Canada Village on September 5 for the Horse Lovers’ Weekend event and will be guests for lunch at Willard’s Hotel.

Visitors can visit Champ and his mother Misty in the paddocks at Loucks Farm.  Horse lovers are invited to Upper Canada Village September 5-7, 2015 to celebrate our unique relationship with the noble horse at Horse Lovers’ weekend.  This special Labour Day weekend event features three days packed with activities showcasing riding, driving and working horses.  Natural horsemanship demonstrations and a mock 1860s horse auction will also be part of the weekend’s activities.  It is a great opportunity to watch, learn and improve your understanding of all things equine, with demonstrations and performances by notable horse experts.
