Parkway to remain closed for the winter
Morrisburg, Ontario – The St. Lawrence Parks Commission announced today that the Long Sault Parkway would remain closed to vehicle traffic through till the Spring of 2011 due to the roadwork construction project. Access for residents of Moulinette Island will not be affected as the closure is from the entry point at Mille Roches Day-Use Park through to the Ingleside entrance.
The refurbishment of the Long Sault Parkway bridges and roadway is on target; however, there are several areas of work that will not be completed until Spring 2011. Final work on the sides of the road, line painting and final sealing are three areas of work that cannot be completed this Fall. Opening the Parkway to vehicle traffic at this time could result in unsafe driving conditions. A build-up of material along the shoulder of the road will not allow surface drainage to occur properly and there could be flooding and freezing of water directly on the road surface.
With the road closed, there will be an expanded opportunity for cross country skiing and snow shoeing. Currently, these winter recreational activities are limited to the five park areas, but now users will be able to use the road as well.
