Grade 3 Special Activity Days
Wednesday to Friday, May 26, 27 & 28, 2010

Grade 3 Special Activities Days Upper Canada Village will once again be offering a series of special activity centres for your Grade 3 students. These activities have been designed to address both overall and specific curriculum expectations in the SOCIAL STUDIES, ENGLISH, MATHEMATICS, and SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY strands of the Grade 3 Ontario Curriculum, and offer unique hands-on ways to address these expectations. For example, at Loucks Farmhouse, students will learn about the diet of early settlers and compare it with today. They will have the chance to see and compare tools at our Cabinetmaker's Shop. Students will be able to learn about structures by examining a timber-framed barn, and they can practice counting, measuring and estimating in our Sawmill yard.

The Upper Canada Food and Fitness Challenge
October 6 to 8, 2010

The Upper Canada Food and Fitness Challenge Invite your students to take the Food and Fitness Challenge! Through hands-on activities, students will gain a deeper appreciation of the physical work, food and nutrition in the 19th century. What did early settlers do for exercise? What influenced their diet, and how many calories did they consume? This program offers a new, unique and exciting way to address expectations in the Health and Physical Education, and Social Sciences and Humanities (Food and Nutrition) strands of the Ontario Curriculum.

Self-Guided Exploration Tours
May 22 to September 6 - 7 days per week
September 7 to October 10 - 5 days per week (Wednesday to Sunday)

Self-Guided Exploration Tours Tailor-make a tour back in time, specific to your own needs! The Village provides a real-life, interactive environment to learn about the 1860s, and how the past continues to shape our lives today. Your group can explore 1860s farming, technology, or daily life, the choice is yours. Your can also take time to enjoy a ride on an 1860s Tow Scow, or on a horse-drawn Carry-All (both are included as part of your Exploration Tour)

A Teacher's Resource Kit comes complete with site information and a selection of activites designed for different grade levels, and will be mailed to you upon request when you book your Exploration Tour.

The Battle of Crysler's Farm - War of 1812
May 6 to June 25, 2010
September 7 to October 8, 2010

The Battle of Crysler's Farm - War of 1812 Role play the life of a recent recruit in the British Army and watch an audio-visual account of the Battle of Crysler's Farm to learn about military life and the importance of this battle to the development of Canada. This program also gives students a feel for the impact of the War of 1812 on civilian life in the early 19th century.

Group Size:  20 to 30 students
Duration: 2 hours
Level: Recommended for Grades 7 & 8
Can be customized for levels.

Village Overnight Live-In Adventure
May 10 to June 24
September 13 to 30, 2010

$51.33 per student (plus tax)

Village Overnight Live-In Adventure Experience a day in the life of a 19th century child. Students are costumed in an 1860s' fashion and participate in various hands-on activities such as baking over an open hearth, sewing, tinsmithing and blacksmithing. They will also assist with farm chores and attend a one-room schoolhouse. The Program begins at 1 p.m. and finishes at 11 a.m. the next day. The living accommodations are in two historical residences, outfitted with modern conveniences (kitchen and washrooms).

A comprehensive Teacher's Guide with menu suggestions, evening activities and pre-trip/post-trip ideas is included.

Duration: 22 hours
Level: Grades 3 to 8

Off-Season Guided Tours*

Students are welcome to take a short trip back in time, as a Village guide leads an informative and scenic walking tour along the Village streets (up to 1½ hours long). Guides explore a number of features of pioneer and early settlement life, including a home, store, mill and school. On request, tours can be adapted to meet your curriculum needs.
