Morrisburg, Ontario – Upper Canada Village will showcase its extensive collection of 19th century transportation with a special selection of carriages during the Riding in Style Weekend on July 18 and 19, 2015.  Guests can explore the fascinating history of horse-drawn vehicles and will have the chance to catch a ride in one.  Choose from the Surrey, Brougham, Low Spring Democrat, or one of the Pommier Carriages.  Rides on historic vehicles will be offered from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in front of Cook’s Tavern.  Or, if you prefer, consider arranging a ride on one of our new wheel chair accessible wagons, available from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon both days.

In addition to those in use, a variety of historical vehicles with different uses will be on display during the weekend including a Spider Phaeton, Barouche, High Spring Democrat, Vis-à-Vis Hearse, Doctor’s Gig, McLaughlin Carriage, and Racing Sulky.

The Eastern Ontario Pleasure Driving Society and the Eastern Ontario Miniature Horse Club will be participating in the Riding in Style weekend again this year. The Pleasure Drivers will be at the Village on Saturday, July 18, and the Miniature Horse Club will be at the Village on Sunday, July 19 - both from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Members of both groups will perform driving demonstrations, greet visitors, and discuss their vehicles, equipment, clothing and horses. The driving will take place in the mall and the grassy area just south of the main parking lot.  Displays will be situated in this same area, close to the front entrance to Upper Canada Village.

Don’t forget that you can also ride in style on the miniature train which now includes an audio tour and a choice of a shorter, Crysler’s Memorial Loop, and a longer trip to the Crysler Park Marina.  Departures leave for the long loop at 11 a.m., 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. from the train station beside the main parking lot in front of Upper Canada Village.
“We have an interesting collection of carriages at Upper Canada Village.  They are a mix of reproductions and originals that are representative of transportation during the 1860s.  When you have the chance to sit in the carriages and take a ride in one, it really brings you closer to the time period – and appreciate our modern day transportation.  This is a great way for us to share a part of the collection with our visitors.”  -- Geoff Waycik, Manager, Upper Canada Village

The Reciprocal Program gives all visitors who purchase an admission a complimentary pass to return on another day or to use the pass to visit Fort Henry National Historic Site of Canada in Kingston.  It’s a great vacation value for families.
